Ladies rugby was new back to Thanet Wanderers RUFC in season 2021-22 having been dormant since 2005. Having started with a handful of ladies training with the girls, with growing numbers the club decided to start their own ladies training sessions in January 2022.
The squad now boasts just short of 40 players aged from 17 years old up to players in their fifties.
Their first game for 17 years took place on 27th March 2022 versus Old Gravesendians at home which resulted in a narrow 36-32 victory. With follow up tournament victories and narrow losses to higher rated teams, the club decided to enter a league for the first time for 2022-23.
The team joined the Inner Warrior (Kent) league in 2022/23 and went through that season winning all league and cup games, gaining the Inner Warrior league & cup double.
Given that success and the growth of the squad to over 40 players, 2023/24 saw 2 teams go out for the first time in Thanet Wanderers RUFC history. The 1st XV will compete two levels higher in NC2 as well as keep the 2nd XV in the Inner Warrior league.
Our aim in season 2023/24 was for the 1st XV to consolidate in the NC2 league with an aim of finishing mid-table. The 2nd XV were also more than capable of retaining their Inner Warrior title and competed well.
Early season results showed that we were more than capable of mid-table and we stared setting our sights a little higher.
Competing in the national RFU Junior Cup also became an aim with the carrot of a Twickenham appearance dangled in front of the squad. That was not to be as we crashed out in the quarter finals at Thurrock RFC in March 2024 but a successful end to the season saw both 1st and 2nd XVs finish as runners up in the respective leagues.
The ladies have a dedicated coaching team headed by Ian Lodge and supported by Patrick Liddle, John White and Maria Castellina, all experienced players at the club.
The ladies squad train every Tuesday evening at the club between 6.30pm and 8.00pm.
Matches take place typically on a Sunday with early afternoon KOs during the playing season (from September to April).
