TWRUFC Ladies section continues to go from strength to strength and currently sit proudly at the top of the NC2 table with a maximum 15 league points.
Since the last newsletter, we have achieved a couple of strong results with a 64-3 win at Lordswood followed by a 58-10 victory at home over Cranbrook, a curtain raiser for the men’s 1st XV game. We currently boast the top try and points and scorer in the league, Rachael Austerberry with 8 tries and 42 points whilst also having 4 of the top 5 try scorers; Jess Anderson and Amy Coster with 5 tries each and Milly Thurman-Newell with 4 tries.
Player numbers are continuing to grow with new players coming in not only from the local area but also further afield from Dover, Folkestone, Herne Bay which shows how our reputation is getting around. Numbers now stand at over 40 and in a couple of weeks we will attempt once again to get two sides out on the same day at Gravesend and Sevenoaks.
Technically the players are getting better and I am fortunate to have a strong coaching team in Patrick Liddle, John White and Tony Boyce looking after the forwards and Lee Halliday and Sam Rolfe looking after the backs. We always have 30 players at training and the ladies listen, learn, soak it up and are getting better and better each week.
At the time of writing we will have just hosted Canterbury Christchurch University team in a 2nd XV fixture under floodlights on Wednesday just gone. We have struggled to get opposition teams for the 2nd XV but this will give some of the squad some valuable pitch time. Check out the website to see how we got on.
This Sunday 29th October 2023 sees us travel to Ashford RFC in the second round of the cup. We beat them in the same competition last season 54-20 featuring a hat-trick from Milly Thurman-Newell but both teams have improved dramatically since then but we are hoping for a similar result to take us safely through to the third round.
If you are interested in trying out ladies rugby at the club, get in touch with Ian Lodge on 07890 426685. And you don't need any experience at all, just a good attitude and work ethic. We can teach you the rest! The Ladies train every Tuesday evening at the club between 6.30pm and 8.00pm with matches taking place typically on a Sunday with early afternoon KOs during the playing season (from September to April).
