Snowdown Colliery RFC 21 – 15 Thanet Wanderers Second XV
(Abandoned after 70 minutes due to injury)
Snowdown, in second place in Kent Rural A-League, entertained Wanderers who were in 4th.. Both teams had won nine of their twelve league matches so a close game was in prospect.
It was almost springlike at kick-off on a good playing surface in Aylesham. The number of penalties for high tackles was noticeably high in the opening fifteen minutes. A scuffle after 15 minutes ended with a penalty awarded to Wanderers and another seven minutes later gave Wanderers’ ten, Callum Duffy, the opportunity to open Wanderers’ scoring from the tee. 3-0 to the visitors. A yellow card for a high tackle was awarded against Snowdon and two minutes later Wanderers went further ahead. Some excellent handling saw the ball moved quickly along the line before it reached Captain Tom Stevens on the left wing who weaved his way through the defence before touching down under the posts. Duffy added the extras and the Wanderers were 10-0 ahead. Ten minutes later Snowdown’s Ten, Stephen Richards responded with a quality individual try as he ran and dodged his way through the visitors’ defence to touch down under the posts and make the score 10-7. Charlie Stainton made a potential try-saving tackle to help ensure there was no change to the score before halftime.
An incident as half time began ended with Red Cards being shown to both a Thanet player and one from Snowdown by referee, Simon Warren. Four minutes into the second period a kickable penalty for Wanderers slipped by the posts but twelve minutes into the half they went further ahead. Pressure had been mounting on the home defence and some very nice rugby from the Thanet side ended with a touchdown for Stainton after centre, Sam Elliot’s chip-through. No conversion so the Wanderers led 15-7. Snowdown upped their pressure, particularly in the pack and Thanet responded well until the final quarter when the hosts scored a second try. The conversion finally went over via an upright and the crossbar so there was just a point in it with Thanet leading 15-14.The lead was soon lost as Snowdown went ahead with a converted try to lead 21-15. With around fifteen minutes remaining there was everything to play for but there was no further score before the incident that led to serious injury to the ankle of Thanet Lock, Regan Doody. He could not be moved before the arrival of the ambulance and the referee quite rightly abandoned the match with around ten minutes remaining. Regan was taken to Canterbury Hospital and treated for a dislocation that has been reset. He awaits further surgery on his Fibula.
Tom Stevens led his side by fine example today and the whole side supported him well against a very physical side. The 2s man of the match was back row forward, Finley Hickmott who showed excellent tackling technique in a fine all-round performance. The 2s will be back in action next Saturday the 1st of February, away against Tunbridge Wells. Kick Off 2 PM.
