Thanet Wanderers 14 Old Elthamians 26
Thanet welcomed table-topping Old Elthamians to St. Peter’s this weekend. Although well ahead on points, this game did not reflect the visitors' dominance in the league.
Thanet fell behind straight from the kick-off after conceding a penalty in the 22 and Elthamians scored a converted try. Thanet made some inroads into the opposition half but were down a player after the tenth minute as Finn White was shown a yellow card for an early tackle after a free kick was awarded to Elthamians. Despite weathering the ten minutes the lead was extended in the 19 minute with their second converted try. Thanet had a period of pressure but could not make the final break to score against a strong defence. An interception by Nick Herbert saw him dash from 60 meters out and score under the posts, with the conversion Thanet was 7-14 down at halftime.
The second half started very much tit for tat with neither team making any decisive moves for the first 10 minutes. A mistake by Elthamians full-back, who knocked the ball into his own in goal, saw Tom Stevens who had chased the ball down to score Wanderers' second try of the afternoon. Lewis Downer made his second conversion of the afternoon
On the hour the visitors were awarded a penalty, which the home supporters deemed unfair, but it enabled Elthamians to retake the lead with their third converted try off the afternoon. They then secured a bonus point with a fourth try, which was also converted.
Thanet at times did not take advantage of the spaces left by the opposition when attacking and deserved to come away with more from the game. The final score flattered the league leaders.
Wanderers who are now in 6th place in Counties Two Kent League, play their last league game of the season away at second-placed Gillingham Anchorians on the 5th of April.
