Folkestone RFC 34 – Thanet Wanderers 24

Wanderers slip to fourth place in Counties 2 Kent league after another defeat.

It was a lovely afternoon for running rugby but there was a cagey opening from both sides as they looked for an opening in the opposition defences. After fifteen minutes, the hosts converted a straightforward penalty. From the restart, a cross kick was grabbed, and the Wanderers’ defense was rounded before a touchdown under the posts, which saw them trailing 10-0. Lewis Downer’s attempted penalty conversion rebounded off the cross bar but the outside centre opened Wanderers’ scoring when he touched down after picking a good line minutes later. His conversion meant Wanderers were just 10-7 down. Half time neared and a moment’s inattention in defence saw another cross kick well caught and a touch down under the posts gave Folkestone a 17 – 7 lead. Wanderers were slow to regroup and the hosts battled their way to the line for another try that was well converted for a 24-7 lead at half-time.

Wanderers made a strong start to the second half before being penalised and being marched back ten metres for dissent. Folkestone scored first and notched their try bonus points 29-7. It’s great to see Tom Walton back amongst Wanderers’ scorers after he battled along the right wing to score in the corner. 29-12. Folkestone switched their line of attack to touch down in the corner to make it 34 12. Time was getting short for Wanderers as they aimed for a try bonus point. Another welcome return to the score-sheet was a try for Marius Thompson who finished off some nice handling in the left corner. Finally, the bonus point try was scored by Brett Scott who recorded the fourth try. Adam Harrison converted with a drop kick and the final score was 34-24.

There is no senior men’s rugby next Saturday. The first XV play their final home fixture of the season against League champions Old Elthamians on the 22nd of March, Kick Off 3 PM.
