Match Report: Thanet Wanderers Colts vs. Deal & Betteshanger Colts
In tough autumnal conditions, Thanet Wanderers Colts faced off against Deal & Betteshanger Colts in a game that was destined to be split by the challenging weather—a strong wind and rain sweeping down the pitch.
The match began with unfortunate drama. Only a minute in, Thanet's Tom Weller suffered a nasty ankle twist, halting play as he had to be carried off the field. We wish Tom a speedy recovery. This early loss was a heavy blow to Thanet, but the team quickly regrouped.
From the restart, Thanet set the tone. Ellis made a break from the base of a scrum, linking with Tom Gough and Charlie Page in a slick series of passes. Reese added to the move, giving Tom another chance to run the overlap before scoring. Callum Duffy calmly added the conversion, making it 7-0.
Thanet’s dominance continued shortly after with some beautiful handling, culminating in a try by James Murdock. At 12-0, it was starting to look like a long day for Deal. However, Deal responded, not giving up and earning a penalty that brought the score to 12-3.
Thanet hit back swiftly. Another strong break from James took the ball deep into Deal’s half, and quick recycling sent the ball to Callum, whose pinpoint kick found Alex in the corner. Alex gathered the ball brilliantly under the harsh conditions, racing through to score, bringing the score to 19-3.
Deal remained determined and caught a break when a kick from Callum unfortunately rebounded off one of his own players, gifting Deal a fortunate try under the posts. With the conversion, it became 19-10.
Thanet were quick to reassert control. A smart tap-and-go from Ellis, exploiting a Deal offside, saw him dive over to extend the lead to 24-10. Thanet’s forwards, led by Carl and Harrison, kept driving, and another clever kick from Callum in the tricky wind saw Tom Gough pounce after a great chase, scoring his second try. Thanet stretched their lead to 31-10.
Deal’s resilience was clear, and they continued to apply pressure, but Thanet’s defense held firm. Then, a risky kick from Deal was intercepted up by Jem Harris on the wing under pressure, who shrugged off a tackle and sprinted the length of the pitch to score, taking the game to 36-10.
Despite the scoreline, Deal had the final say. A well-placed kick through by their winger and a chase led to their second try, bringing the final score to 36-15.
In challenging weather conditions, Thanet Wanderers Colts outplayed Deal & Betteshanger with a combination of tactical kicking, quick hands, and solid defense. Deal fought hard but struggled to contain Thanet’s attacking threat. Thanet’s strong team performance, particularly the kicking game, proved decisive, leading to a well-earned cup victory.
