Date: 15th September 2024
Venue: Canterbury
Final Score: Canterbury 36 - 10 Thanet Wanderers
In a highly anticipated clash, Thanet Wanderers Colts played local rivals Canterbury in the first of three games against each other this season. Played on the impressive pristine National League 2 East Canterbury pitch under sunny skies, the match showcased a well-spirited crowd and perfect rugby conditions.
Thanet Wanderers, under the captaincy of big second row Charlie Bailey, were keen to test themselves against a strong Canterbury side, which boasted both experience and depth with their two sides and Kent players. Thanet, again fielding a blend of mainly U17s, faced an uphill challenge but were eager to make an impact despite injuries sidelining some key players (some of whom had sporting turned up to support).
Canterbury set the tone early with a well-executed try through their forwards, although Thanet had reason to feel aggrieved as it appeared a Canterbury player played the ball on the floor during a ruck. With the conversion kicked the scoreboard read 7-0. Thanet's mistakes were again quickly capitalized on by Canterbury, who added another score to make it 14-0 before Thanet had really got into the game.
Despite the early setback, Thanet fought back with resilience. Their forwards engaged in effective rucking and tackling with the Finns, Hubert all putting in big shifts, while the backs displayed good coordination. A standout move saw Vinnie and centre James combine to release Jem on the wing, who sprinted from the 22-meter line to score unopposed. The score was now 14-5 and Thanet seemingly getting into gear and putting themselves back in contention.
However, another crucial unforced error, with what seemed to be a missed knock-on, allowed Canterbury to extend their lead to 21-5.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Thanet did get a consolation try with Carl D taking the ball from a quick tap penalty and diving over the line through the Canterbury defense. However, Thanet struggled to find their rhythm, with moments of over-eagerness and lapses in focus. Canterbury capitalized on these opportunities, adding three more soft tries, including a particularly disappointing score in the final play of the game. bringing the score to 36-10.
While the final scoreline might suggest a one-sided affair, Thanet Wanderers displayed commendable fight and a determined attitude throughout. The match offered valuable experience and key learning opportunities, particularly in terms of sticking to their game plan, reducing mistakes and selecting the right options at the right time. The positives from the game, especially in the context of a young and developing squad, highlight areas for growth and promise for future fixtures.
Positives and learnings that can be taken into next week’s crucial cup game against unknown quantity Wanstead.
Tom W, Jem, Vinnie and James all had strong games and good to see Dillon’s flowing locks back from his knee injury. Man of the match went to the captain Charlie Barley for his dogged determination and leadership.
