Thanet Wanderers Colts vs. Beccehamian Colts – Top of the League Clash
A much-anticipated clash between league leaders Thanet Wanderers Colts and Old Beccehamians, held on a wet and miserable winter day in Beckenham, lived up to its billing but ended in disappointment for the visitors.
The day started with a few travel hiccups for the Wanderers – one player mistakenly headed to the wrong Beckenham club, and another had a flat tire. Credit to the team for showing great resilience in getting to the ground just in time for kick-off.
From the outset, Thanet applied strong pressure with their physicality, especially in the scrum, thanks to their larger pack. However, a series of unforced errors and dropped passes hinted that it wasn't going to be their day. Despite dominating possession, Thanet struggled to get the continuity they needed.
The game took a turn when a kick was charged down and fell straight into the hands of the Old Beccehamian centre, who ran unopposed to score, putting the home side 7-0 up. The Beccehamian backs looked sharp throughout, and it wasn’t long before they capitalized on another mistake, pouncing on a dropped ball. A try-saving tackle from Ollie was deemed high, resulting in a yellow card and leaving Thanet down to 14 men.
During their period of disadvantage, Old Beccehamian made the most of the extra man, scoring another try to extend their lead to 14-0.
The weather conditions continued to worsen, making the game increasingly difficult to play, but Thanet’s strong running game finally paid off. A well-executed move involving Finley Twyman and Finlay Grounds saw them cross the line, bringing the score to 14-5.
However, a serious injury caused a lengthy delay, forcing the game to move to another pitch. The break seemed to halt Thanet’s momentum, and after a series of miscommunications in the backline, a volleyed kick allowed an Old Beccehamian player to gather and score. With the score now at 19-5, Thanet’s hopes were beginning to fade.
Despite a late rally, with Charlie Bailey powering over the line from a penalty move, and Callum converting to make it 19-12, it was too little, too late. Thanet couldn't quite find the clinical edge required to make a full comeback.
A tough loss for Thanet, who will certainly rue missed opportunities and errors in their performance. They showed glimpses of their potential, but inconsistency and a few crucial mistakes meant they couldn’t deliver their best on the day.
